The beginning of a new hive, and in turn a new colony, is a process. Actually, it’s much like moving to a new house. We’ve managed to cover 3 simple steps of how hives begin so that you can get to know more about the nature of our happy bees!

Step 1.)

A new colony of bees comes about when one colony gets too big for their hive. This is when some of the ‘birds must leave the nest’. The colony splits into two, and one group, including the queen, must go on the hunt for a new hive. This process is known as swarming.

Step 2.)

The scout bees venture out, in a landscape similar to this one, in search of a new home. During this time, the other colonies members wait, usually on a nearby tree. Once the perfect spot is found, the scout bees return and do a little dance to say a home has been found.

Step 3.)

The bees can settle into their new home and begin collecting pollen, expanding the colony and making honey. The main purpose of a beehive is to store honey, for the babies, the queen and the colony. This is especially important when winter comes around as bees can’t search for food during the cold winter season.
